Medieval monuments of Oltenia

Abstract

The volume dedicated to Oltenia offers a well-documented journey into one of Romania’s richest yet still underexplored cultural heritage regions. Conceived as a cultural guide, it brings together representative monuments from the area and integrates them into a coherent narrative that goes beyond a purely touristic inventory.

Each site is contextualized within its historical, social, and artistic framework, while also providing information on its founders, the craftsmen who built these ensembles, and the successive phases of restoration they have undergone. In this way, the monuments are presented not merely as destinations to be visited, but as living historical organisms shaped by continuous transformation and reinterpretation.

The book continues the “Vetre de lumină” editorial series initiated by the Art Conservation Support Association, which aims to replace “checklist tourism” with a more attentive and informed cultural journey, grounded in a deeper understanding of heritage value.

The author, Prof. Dr. Corina Popa, art historian and Senior Researcher (Grade I), professor at the National University of Arts in Bucharest and member of national heritage commissions, brings to this volume the expertise of a career dedicated to the study and preservation of cultural heritage, supported by extensive scholarly and editorial work.
