Monumente Medievale de pe Valea Târnavelor

Abstract

Discover the Târnava Valley and its medieval monuments through a guiding book that will lead your steps, your eyes, and your thoughts toward both ensembles and intricate details. Carry in your heart the beauty of monuments that have brought recognition to the country.

Through the Hearths of Light collection, we continue the journey begun in Bukovina and Oltenia.

The volume is a carefully documented work by specialists in medieval art history and conservation-restoration.

It includes:

  • over 700 previously unpublished images — aerial views, interior and exterior shots, and close-up details of mural paintings captured from scaffolding during restoration work;

  • maps of monuments and suggested travel routes;

  • architectural plans of monuments and ensembles.

Fifteen of the most representative medieval heritage sites of the region are presented: the Reformed (Calvinist) church in Alma, and the Evangelical (Lutheran) churches in Ațel, Băgaciu, Biertan, Brateiu, Curciu, Dârlos, Ighișu Nou, Mălâncrav, Moșna, Nemșa, Richiș, and Șmig, as well as the most significant examples of religious and civic architecture in the cities of Mediaș and Sighișoara.

Alongside architecture and sculpture, the book also presents medieval mural paintings that often decorate these buildings, as well as objects of artistic and historical value—polyptych altarpieces, furniture pieces, liturgical objects, and other heritage items preserved inside.
