Mural painting in the north of Moldavia
Oliviu Boldura

Abstract
Mural Painting in Northern Moldavia. Aesthetic Changes and Restoration is probably the finest example of a highly detailed, millimeter-level analysis of painted mural surfaces, combined with a comprehensive, overarching vision of the vast surfaces found in the famous monuments of Bucovina.
These monuments, which bring international recognition to Romania precisely through their mural paintings, have been studied in depth by the author, who has successfully enhanced their value while preserving their original integrity. The experience of over 40 years of professional activity on major monuments in Romania and more than 30 years as a professor at the National University of Arts in Bucharest of Prof. Univ. Dr. Oliviu Boldura come together in this synthesis volume. This is no small achievement, which is why the first edition of the book, published in 2008, received the “George Oprescu” Award of the Romanian Academy.
This second edition includes additions to the content, based on information gathered during conservation and restoration interventions in recent years.
The book contributes to raising the level of specialization in monument conservation, to achieving higher-quality interventions, and also helps inform art lovers about the correct way to interact with cultural heritage in order to preserve national identity. The reader of this book will primarily be the trainee restorer, who will find in its pages, in case-study analyses and proposed approaches or interventions, answers to questions and solutions to the problems they face. Among the beneficiaries of the information presented in the work are restorers, art historians, chemists, physicists, biologists, museum curators, conservators, collectors, painters, technicians, students, and art lovers.
