The Restoration Notebooks 2021 (X)

Abstract

In 2021, the editorial direction of The Restoration Notebooks focused on the theme of professional ethics and deontology, highlighting the need to clarify and strengthen professional identity within the field of heritage conservation and restoration. At the same time, the issue emphasized the importance of communicating and understanding the role of specialists beyond the strict boundaries of the field, in relation to other professions and to society as a whole.

Marking the journal’s tenth anniversary, the publication reflects a continuous diversification of both the themes addressed and the types of contributions and specialists involved, facilitating a genuine exchange of experience and a more comprehensive understanding of cultural heritage in its entirety. An interdisciplinary approach thus becomes essential, particularly in the context of interventions on complex monuments, where structural and artistic components — mural paintings, wood, stone, and other materials — must be analyzed and treated in relation to one another. Interdisciplinarity implies not only the expansion of knowledge, but also the responsibility to ensure that conservation-restoration interventions are beneficial to the material being treated, without negatively affecting other components of the heritage asset.

Case studies play a central role in this dynamic, enriching professional experience through the dissemination of concrete intervention examples. Consequently, the journal places particular emphasis on presenting recent conservation-restoration interventions and research dedicated to cultural heritage.

Furthermore, the contributions submitted to the editorial board reveal a constant concern among specialists regarding systemic dysfunctions within the field, as well as the challenges encountered in professional practice, despite the evident need for expertise. Nevertheless, restoration and research activities continue, supported by the commitment of dedicated professionals, as demonstrated by the case studies published over time.

The celebration of the journal’s tenth anniversary therefore represents not only a commemorative milestone, but also a reaffirmation of its commitment to supporting the development of the field through information, critical reflection, and the facilitation of professional exchange, for the benefit of both current specialists and future generations.
