Restaurarea picturilor murale din nava bisericii unitariene din Dârjiu

Abstract

In the heart of Dârjiu village in Harghita County, the Fortified Unitarian Church of Dârjiu preserves one of the most important ensembles of Gothic mural painting in Transylvania. Dated largely around 1419, the nave frescoes – including the renowned cycle of the Legend of Saint Ladislaus, hagiographic scenes, and rare surviving representations – constitute an exceptional testimony to medieval Central European art and to the circulation of painting workshops during the period.

This publication documents the extensive research, conservation, and restoration campaign carried out on the nave murals, implemented in successive stages starting in 2008. Stratigraphic investigations enabled the identification of previously unknown fragments, clarified the historical phases of intervention, and provided a deeper understanding of the original fresco technique, executed on a thin plaster layer with a restricted yet highly refined chromatic palette.

The restoration interventions focused on stabilizing the plaster support, consolidating fragile areas, cleaning surface deposits, and recovering the iconographic coherence severely affected by centuries of degradation, repainting, and inappropriate interventions. At the same time, the project carefully respected the historical authenticity of the monument, preserving all meaningful traces of its evolution.

The final stage was dedicated to aesthetic presentation, where subtle, reversible chromatic integration techniques allowed the visual coherence of the murals to be restored without altering their original character. The result is a reconstituted unity in which the Gothic frescoes regain their narrative clarity and original expressive power.

This publication offers a comprehensive insight into one of the most significant mural painting restoration campaigns in Romania, combining scientific research, technical precision, and a sensitive approach to cultural heritage.
